Didier Poncet, geologist and head curator of heritage, presents the richness and history of the site: the only geological nature reserve in Poitou-Charentes, the Réserve Naturelle Nationale du Toarcien consists of two former open-cast quarries, exploited until the early 20th century for the production of dimension stone and limestone. The site is of fundamental scientific interest on an international scale. Since 1987, it has preserved the Toarcian stratotype, enabling observation of three successive Jurassic stages. Extremely fossiliferous, the site has yielded a very large number of ammonites, enabling Jean Gabilly (University of Poitiers) to subdivide the Toarcian stage - some 7 million years old - into 34 objectively indivisible time units, the horizons.
