Conférence : Le régime juridique de l’antarctique
Antarctica has long remained off the international agenda. Discovered late, it has remained uninhabited. This remoteness and relative lack of interest explain the remarkable legal regime with which Antarctica was endowed by treaty in 1959. At the height of the Cold War, the two great powers agreed to make Antarctica a Land of Peace and Science. Subsequently, it became the subject of extensive environmental regulations. But the dangers are mounting. Its extremely fragile environment is threatened by the expansion of new activities, including tourism. Climate change is having a major impact on a continent made of ice. Antarctica is now being shaken by global upheavals, particularly in the context of the war in Ukraine. Lecture given by Florian AUMOND, HDR lecturer at the University of Poitiers.
