Porte Châlon

  • Porte chalon rénovée 2 (2)

Old city gate, rebuilt in the 17th century, listed as a Historic Monument.
Porte Chalon was built in the 18th century by the Comte de Blossac, Marquis de la Bourdonnaie.

Erected as a triumphal arch in the strategic center of the city, on the edge of the Paris-Ocean axis, and facing the road that leads to Parthenay, Porte Chalon is undoubtedly the best-known monument of Saint-Maixent l’Ecole.

The main entrance to the city has always been the Porte, flanked by two square pavilions, the tops of which are crowned by a stone balustrade.
