Like any city, Niort mobilizes its citizens to defend its territory. The "bourgeois militia" watches to secure the streets. Louis XIII transformed it in 1621 into a regiment of Royal-Niort.
The exactions in the Protestant Poitou at the end of the seventeenth century. led the king to maintain on Niort soldiers whose lodging was provided by the inhabitants.
It was to relieve the population that the construction of a barracks was decided in 1732 and the work completed in 1751. 43 regiments of cavalry occupy it over 160 years. One of the most famous is the 7th regiment of HUSSARDS, housed from 1892 to 1919, which stands out during the Napoleonic Wars, the War of 1870 and the Great War.
The military use of the site disappears in the second half of the 20th century. The Duguesclin Centre today hosts various public and cultural establishments.
