The oldest denominations of Epannes suggest that Spaniards are not foreign to its foundation. Perhaps Iberian legionnaires at the time of the Roman conquest of Gaul whose village would have been a former military station? On the return of a crusade led by Saint Louis, Robert de Béchillon was knighted and received the fief of Epannes as a reward for his bravery. Subsequently, several families succeeded the head of the seigneury. In 1853, Louis-Jules de Cugnac bought back the castle that was rebuilt in the 18th century. Nestled in the Courance valley, the church of Ste-Marie-Madeleine watches over its flock.

Also worth seeing: 17th century Hosannic cross, former water mill, mobile floor wash-house, communal bread oven, bypass beer of the Courance, lake and former marshes once cultivated in hemp fields.
