Eglise Saint-Pierre de La Rochénard

  • L'église Saint-Laurent de La Rochénard

The XIIth century church of Saint Pierre was rebuilt in the XIVth century but destroyed during the wars of religion and then rebuilt conserving fragments of the Romanesque columns and chapiteau with large ivy leaves. The storm of 1999 broke the neo-Gothic bell tower porch into pieces. It was restored in 2001 thanks to 5 companies under the guidance of the architect of the Batiments de France and with financial help from Deux Sèvres Council, Poitou Charentes Council, the Regional Direction of Cultural Affairs and the Smacl ( the mutual insurance company of the local municipalities). There is a bell which weighs 313 kg whose name is Marie-Cléopâtre and which was blessed on the 30th June 1868.
