Eglise Saint-Caprais à Bessines

The hermit Caprais, a little-known saint, became the first bishop of Agen. Bessines in the fourth century. He was the only church in the diocese of Poitiers under this name.
The church was first mentioned in a charter in 988. The Xiè s. monument is refurbished in the Xvè s. Half ruined during the Wars of Religion, it is partially restored in the Xviiè s. In 1982, following damage caused by bad weather, the building is refurbished and then again delivered to the cult in 1986.
What to see: 17th century portal, comb-bell tower, 2 clams (Bessines is placed on the Way of Santiago de Compostela), beam of glory representing the risen Christ surrounded by Mary and John the Evangelist (realized in 1982 by the Niortais sculptor Laurent Page and installed in 2000 to celebrate the millennium of the building), hosannière cross of 1771 in the cemetery.
