Bessines, entre côteau et marais
A village developed around the ancient domain of Bassinius, rich Gallo-Roman owner, Bessines is located at the crossroads of Aunis and Poitou. Bordered by the Jaron bief and the Old Sèvre, the rural commune nestles on the side of a hillside overlooking the ancient Gulf of Pictons. Its Romanesque church, a stop on the Chemin de Compostelle, and its 3 ports open the Marais Poitevin. The commune has welcomed many personalities of the plastic arts or of the 7th art of which the most famous is Jean Richard, the only actor in the world to have interpreted the whole of the Maigret Commissioner of Georges Simenon and who was born in 1921 in Bessines, at the Manor de la Pierre Levée (private property of the 15th century).
